Sign Language Instruction

Department of American Sign Language and Deaf Studies at Gallaudet University. The University offers a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in American Sign Language and Deaf Studies.

The Center for ASL Literacy provides teaching and testing services for on-campus personnel. Includes information on the SCPI. Dr. Judith Mounty (Judith.Mounty@gallaudet.edu) is the Director of the Center for ASL Literacy. The Center may be reached at 202-651-5778.

ASL Use and Recognition

How many people use ASL? Tom Allen, Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, answers this frequently asked question. Other demographic information about deaf people is provided by the Gallaudet Research Institute.

States that Recognize American Sign Language as a Foreign Language. Reported by the National Deaf Education Network and Clearinghouse at the Clerc Center.

Recognition of ASL as a foreign language. Information on states' recognition of ASL and the awarding of credit for ASL courses. Sherman Wilcox (Department of Linguistics, University of New Mexico) has developed several web documents related to ASL and its acceptance by colleges and universities in the United States as a foreign or second language.

Ethnologue. The Ethnologue is a catalogue of more than 6,700 languages spoken in 228 countries. The Ethnologue Name Index lists over 39,000 language names, dialect names, and alternate names. The Ethnologue Language Family Index organizes languages according to language families. American Sign Language is one of the 103 languages classified in Ethnologue as deaf sign languages.

Assessment of ASL Proficiency

SCPI at Gallaudet University .The Center for ASL Literacy site has information on the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview (SCPI), which is used to assess proficiency in sign language at Gallaudet University. The Center for ASL Literacy provides teaching and testing services for on-campus personnel (faculty and staff) only.

SCPI at NTID. This website provides an overview of the SCPI, including information about SCPI Training Workshops by Frank Caccamise & William Newell.

ASL & Deafness Resources

Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. Includes a wealth of information about interpreting, including events, code of ethics, National Testing System, directory of affiliates.

Christian Vogler's Research on American Sign Language Recognition. Dr. Vogler is a Visiting Research Scientist at the Gallaudet Research Institute.

Center for Sign Language & Communication of the Deaf in Hamburg, Germany, provides many resources, including Sign Language Dictionaries.

American Sign Language Linguistic Research Project is a collaborative research project among Boston University, Dartmouth College, Rutgers University, and Gallaudet University. Describes the Sign Stream linguistic analysis program.

American Sign Language Browser Michigan State University's ASL Browser web site, an online American Sign Language (ASL) browser where you can look up video of thousands of ASL signs and learn interesting things about them.

American Sign Language Teachers' Association provides information on certification and evaluation of sign language teachers. Affiliated with the National Association of the Deaf.
