Doctor Chair of Deaf Studies was established in recognition of the contributions of Powrie Vaux Doctor, a member of the Gallaudet College faculty for forty-three years, a respected scholar, both nationally and internationally, and a beloved friend to the global deaf community.

The Doctor Chair enables Gallaudet University to bring to campus persons who will contribute to the intellectual and/or creative life of Gallaudet University and the deaf community, and who in turn can benefit from the University's unique human and material resources. The recipient's work is expected to improve general understanding of deaf people and deafness and/or enhance the quality of deaf people's lives. Scholars and artists from all fields are encouraged to apply for a one- or two-semester appointment.

Appointments to the Doctor Chair are made by the President of Gallaudet University upon recommendation of a campus-wide selection committee. Interested candidates should provide a curriculum vitae, an outline of the major project(s) to be conducted while on campus, and a plan for mutually beneficial interaction with the University community. Appointments to the Chair are generally made well in advance so that the selected candidate will have adequate time to make personal and professional arrangements prior to coming to Gallaudet University. The recipient of the Chair receives a salary as well as housing on the Gallaudet campus. Office space and other support services are made available through the Office of the Director of the Gallaudet Research Institute.

About Powrie Vaux Doctor
Powrie V. Doctor was born in 1903 in Scotch Plains, Belleville, Kansas. He held master's degrees from George Washington University and Gallaudet College, a Ph.D. from Georgetown University, and honorary doctorates from Gallaudet College and Gonzaga College High School.

Dr. Doctor joined the faculty of Gallaudet College in 1928 as an instructor in English and history. He became an internationally known authority on the education of deaf people. He served as executive secretary of the International Congress on Education of the Deaf in Washington, D.C. in 1963. Dr. Doctor participated in the International Congress on Psychology in Moscow in 1966, the World Federation of the Deaf Congress in Warsaw in 1967 and the International Congress of the Deaf in Stockholm in 1970. He was attending the meetings of the World Federation of the Deaf in Paris at the time of his death in 1971.

For almost thirty years, Dr. Doctor was associated with the American Annals of the Deaf, the oldest journal on deafness in the world and the oldest educational journal in the U.S., serving as assistant editor from 1940-1948 and as editor from 1948-1968.

In 1960, the American Speech and Hearing Association recognized Dr. Doctor for his "40 years of achievements and service to the deaf." In 1970, the Georgetown University Alumni Association honored him with their William Gaston Award as an outstanding educator.

At the time of his death, he was chairman of the Department of Government at Gallaudet College, having also served as Acting Dean of the Gallaudet Graduate School for the 1970-71 academic year.
