Schaefer Professorship: An award will be made annually or bi-annually
to a distinguished Gallaudet faculty member. The award provides funds for
release-time support so that the faculty member can devote concentrated
effort to a significant project. The funds may be used to free up the
faculty member full-time for a full semester or half-time for two
semesters. Summer support is negotiable. Funds are also available to
support costs in addition to the faculty member's salary. These include
research-related travel, research assistance, books and materials, and
other non-salary costs. (The amount of non-salary funds available is be
determined by the nature of the project and the availability of funds.)
Regardless of the time span over which the salary support is spread, the
faculty member is considered the "Schaefer Professor" for the entire
academic year. The Gallaudet Research Institute coordinates support for
the Schaefer Professor and administers the Professorship in collaboration
with the appropriate department of instruction.
The selection of the Schaefer Professor is made by a campus-wide committee
of faculty and staff serving three-year overlapping terms. Final
appointment of the Professor is by the Provost upon recommendation of the
committee via the Dean of the Graduate School and Professional Programs.
The committee requests nominations for the award (including self
nominations) and also may actively seek to identify appropriate
candidates. The Dean and Provost act on the committee's recommendation as
soon as possible in order to permit appropriate arrangements within the
department.
Announcement: Formal announcement of the Professorship is made at
commencement. At this time, the recipient also receives a cash award of
$5,000.
Eligibility: Anyone who is a Gallaudet faculty member (or a staff
person who is eligible to be a faculty member) can be considered. These
guidelines envision that the award will go to an experienced
scholar/researcher with a distinguished record of productivity.
Depending on the field of study, the recipient might also be expected to
have received grants or other external awards in the past. The fields of
study eligible for support are not restricted to those that are
deafness-related. In sum, the award is offered in recognition of past
productivity and in support of further research/scholarship.
Schaefer Lecture Series: In alternate years there may be a
"Schaefer Distinguished Lecture Series." For this purpose, funds from the
endowment would be used to bring from off-campus a distinguished scholar
for a period of about a week. This scholar would give one or more
lectures and otherwise interact with the academic community on a topic or
topics of wide interest. The scholar would be identified and invited by
the Schaefer Chair selection committee and the visit would be coordinated
through the Gallaudet Research Institute.
