Abstract of Project Funded for FY 2000
| Self-Monitoring During Speech Articulation By Hearing Aid and
Cochlear Implant Users
Dragana Barac-Cikoja, Ph.D. This is a proposal to conduct two studies in preparation for a grant application to an external funding agency. The focus of these studies is on the role of auditory self-monitoring in speech communication and visual self-monitoring in sign communication by persons with hearing loss. Due to differences in available methodological and conceptual tools for investigating self-monitoring in these two communication modalities, the objectives and the activities for the studies are different. For the study of auditory self-monitoring, two experiments are proposed. They will examine the effects of alterations in auditory feedback on speech articulation as a function of device type, i.e., hearing aid (HA) and cochlear implants (CI). ). The results should reveal whether HA and CI users can efficiently use auditory feedback during speech articulation. For the study of visual self-monitoring, preparatory work is proposed that will lead to experimental investigations analogous to those used for the study of auditory self-monitoring. |
