The Integration and Assimilation of Immigration Workers in Western Europe

Carol Frankel, Foreign Languages

During the last thirty-five years, the influx of immigrant workers has had a tremendous impact on the changing demography of large cities, and in particular on the economy, social welfare, education, and more recently, unemployment, racism, and crime. Although I will be studying the impact of the immigrant worker or gastarbeiter in Western Europe, there are definite parallels to be drawn between Europe and the impact of immigrant workers into the United States. Not surprisingly, there are many parallels to be drawn with the Deaf population in the United States, in particular, in questions of education, employment, equal opportunity and issues concerning a “culture within a culture” and cultural conflicts. During my sabbatical leave, in France, I plan to do general research on the immigrant worker in western Europe and particular research on the parallels which can be drawn with the American Deaf population, specifically in the area of integration, assimilation and culture conflict.
