The Holocaust and the Deaf Community; Phase 4 Donna F. Ryan and John S. Schuchman, Government and History In the summer of 1998, Professors
Donna F. Ryan and John S. Schuchman co-chaired the conference: "Deaf People
in Hitler's Europe, 1933-1945" co-sponsored by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial
Museum and Gallaudet University. Attendees shared information and
reiterated the importance of the continued search for deaf Holocaust survivors.
Building on their earlier research with survivors, Professors Ryan and
Schuchman propose a three-week visit to Berlin, Budapest, and Vienna. In
the summer of 1997, they interviewed a dozen Jewish deaf survivors in Budapest.
Since time, two have died. It is imperative that we locate and interview
as many remaining survivors as we can.
