Recreation and Therapeutic Recreation Credentialing Requirements

The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) is the credentialing body for recreation and leisure professionals. NRPA administers the Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) examination. The National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) is the national credentialing organization for therapeutic recreation and recreation therapy. NCTRC administers the Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) examination. Membership Organizations in Recreation and Therapeutic Recreation

The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) is a membership organization representing professional and citizen concerns related to the recreation and park needs of the nation. The mission of NRPA is "to advance parks, recreation and environmental conservation efforts that enhance the quality of life for all people". (www.nrpa.org, 2001) There are many branches of NRPA, one of which is the National Therapeutic Recreation Society (NTRS). NTRS is a membership organization dealing specifically with issues related to providing therapeutic recreation services to individuals with disabilities. Membership is open to professionals, citizens, consumers, and students. Both NRPA and NTRS can be contacted at 22377 Belmont Road, Ashburn, VA 20148. The American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) is a national membership organization which represents the needs and interests of recreational therapists. ATRA can be contacted at1414 Prince Street, Alexandria, VA 22314 or at www.atra-tr.org/atra.htm.

The American Association for Leisure and Recreation (AALR) is a branch of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). AALR serves recreation professionals who are interested in advancing the profession and enhancing the quality of life through leisure and recreation experiences. The membership includes recreation and therapeutic recreation professionals. AALR can be contacted at 1900 Association Drive, Reston, VA 20191 or at www.aahperd.org.
