Computer-based automated sign language recognition is a relatively new and exciting field of research that will play an increasingly important role in both accessibility and future human-computer interaction. It is also a field that requires extensive interdisciplinary collaboration among computer scientists and linguists. In this talk I will discuss the current state of the art in sign language recognition, and the reasons for why it is still lagging so far behind speech recognition. I will then discuss the most promising avenues for future research, and in particular my work on sign language and facial expression recognition that is currently underway at GRI.
